A Life Worth Living: Love, reflections, questions, and more

Posted byLori Posted onDecember 29, 2010 Comments13

A dear friend of mine (hi Lucia!) shared with me this quote, one that couldn’t be more correct:

β€œThere are four questions of value in life: What is sacred? Of what is the spirit made? What is worth living for, and what is worth dying for? The answer to each is the same. Only love.”
-Don Juan DeMarco

Love really is what life is all about. Loving ourselves, loving others, loving life. To me, finding love in all these things is about finding peace within ourselves, and respect for all. But finding the path to this place, since that is the journey, is the most difficult part.

I guess just practicing love gets you closer to this, right? Start everything you do with love. Bring love with you everywhere you go.

This includes making sure you are doing things you love. Reading, cooking, talking with friends, exercising, maybe even working. Whatever it is, try to take a few minutes (if not all of the minutes spent) appreciating the act of [fill in the blank]. Enjoy the paper filing you are doing. Enjoy and accept the pure difficulty in lifting that barbell. Finding the love, the peace, the acceptance of your actions may be the best practice in finding that love for living.

Another dear person in my life, and wise, wise woman (hi Mom), gave me a series of questions to look at every morning and every night. These questions are reflections that you ask yourself and to answer honestly. Recently, asking myself these questions have actually helped me feel better (since lately I have been feeling a little down- damn cold weather).

These questions have also literally changed lives, just by giving yourself permission to love yourself; or at least finding ways to acceptance within your life. So I wanted to share the questions with you. Answering them couldn’t hurt, could it?

The Evening Questions

1. What have I given today? In what ways have I given today?

2. What have I learned today?

3. How has today added to the quality of my life?

4. How can I use today as an investment in my life?

That’s it. Try them out, see how you feel after answering these questions. For me, I find that I feel happier and more content with myself, which I can definitely improve on… loving myself.

  2. This may be my favorite post of yours ever! It reminds me of an excerpt from Rosemary Gladstar’s Family Herbal. She talks about living art, instead of making art. When I manage to turn my days into art, that’s when I love my life the most. Thanks for the reminder! Happy new year!

  3. These are great Lori! I’ve also been in a really down mood lately. Part weather. Part running injury. Part just not feeling good about the way I look. Part med school. And I think asking myself these and reminding myself that I can rise above all of this will be really good for my mental health.

  4. Great post girl!!! I do not even know where to begin…but Life is worth living because of love πŸ™‚ Loving oneself is hard to do, but I love myself because I never give up. I always keep trying, keep fighting!

Thank you for sharing these questions with us! I love them, and will refer to this post often.

  5. Your mom’s gift and comment are priceless and amazing. I think I need to start doing this. I used to write down 5 things I accomplished at the end of every day. It takes away from the “I didn’t get anything done” feeling that we feel a lot. I learned that I always got way more done than I had thought originally.

  13. what a great post, lori. this is why i love your blog — i’m so glad i stumbled on it! the cold weather has been getting me down a lot lately, too. (um, HOW RIDICULOUS was the rain yesterday? and the freezing-ness?! (sidenote: i love that we live so close to each other too so i know exactly the type of weather you’re referring to!!)) on those difficult days (like yesterday) i try and focus on the positive as well! i ask myself: what in my life is bringing me happiness? what object of positivity can i focus on? i’ll also try and do the things i love. yesterday i rock climbed and did yoga. so centering on such an emotionally rough day!

i love the end of the day questions, too!! as of late i have found myself fixating on more negative aspects at the end of the day. i think if i use those questions it will really help me stay positive in a moment of vulnerability. thanks, lori! have a wonderful wednesday πŸ™‚
