I Pack Heat

Posted byLori Posted onJanuary 21, 2011 Comments13

Ok, so I don’t really pack heat but I do carry a mean lunch. I also do the world a favor by using a byo bag.

Usually, as I stroll into work with my overflowing lunch parcel in hand, I ponder which item I am going to eat first.

Sadly, yes, I think about food… a lot.

It’s not such a bad thing. I mean, I get to create all sorts of crazy, and most of the time good, meals. I have a food blog. I read food blogs all day. And so why shouldn’t I surround myself with thoughts of broccoli? (Just for the record, it’s usually not broccoli unless it’s drowning in a sea of hummus. Yeah, you know what I’m talking about.)

Don't judge the dirty... or is that mustard?

See, not only am I trying to put on some muscle but I’m also saving money and eating healthier by packing the goods. So, please, pull up a keyboard, grab a cup of coffee (since I’m on day 3 of no caffeine and I’m suffering), and sit back to a trip inside my byo (as dirty as that sounds, I had to giggle).

Be warned, I usually bring more than I can carry but less than I can eat. πŸ˜‰

Container #1

Egg Scramble with acorn squash and avocadoes

Container #2 + Container #3

Leftovers: Healthy Chinese Chicken Salad and a baked sweet potato

Loose-in-The-Bag #1

Persimmon (my favorite! and I swear that one hasn’t gone bad..)

Loose-in-The-Bag #2

Trader Joe’s Organic Mint Tea

Loose-in-The-Bag #3

Knife, fork, and spoon (you never know which utensil will be required)

Already-At-Work #1

Teeccino Chocolate Mint Herbal Coffee (crack I tell you, crack) and Coconut Creamer

Already-At-Work #2

Dijon Mustard Love (<–because it needs no introduction, and because words just won’t describe- come on, you don’t stash condiments everywhere just in case?)

——–

And yes, I eat a lot. I have growing muscles that need feeding! Along with all that, I had a half a smoothie before my workout and the other half after, I’ll have dinner and probably something dessertish when I get home, and 3 or more liters of water. See! I pack heat.

I even pack pink smoothies.

Cherry Velvet Protein Smoothie (adapted from April’s recipe)

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder
  • 2 tbsp hemp seeds
  • 6 (or so) drops Vanilla Creme Stevia (or sweetener of choice)
  • 1/2 cup frozen cherries
  • Few drops of red food coloring
  • Ice (to your liking)
  • 1 tsp chia seeds (or thickening gums- although my body greatly dislikes these)

Blend all, top with the requisite goji berries, and enjoy! Feed those muscles!

What’s in your byo?

Do you pack lunch for work or prefer to spend those dollars (cause that is fun too)?

  1. I do the same except that my bag doesn’t overflow, which is only because I bought a gigantic one, I still manage to fill it up though.

  2. i am all about taking a lunchbox with me to work. πŸ˜€
there is no guarantee that i’ll be able to find something i can eat (b/c of food intolerances), so i usually pack quite a bit.
yesterday i packed 2 baked potatoes, a salad, a Larabar, a pear, peanut butter, and rice Chex cereal. sadly, it wasn’t enough-i was so hungry when i left work!

  3. I am TOTALLY a lunch packer as well. first of all because it is just so damn expensive to buy lunch. Second of all because it is just so damn unhealthy to buy lunch. third of all…because I really like eating my leftovers for lunch.

Yours looks fantastical. You can pack me lunch any day.

  4. What a neat post! Thanks for sharing.

I always pack my own, can scarcely imagine doing differently and sometimes there’s a mismatch between my expectations (pack everything) and my husband’s (grab something when you’re out). If I can manage it, I love to pack smoothies. Usually carrots. Lately, lots of mature coconut pieces.

Real neat neoprene bag too. And that teecino is too decadent! Peppermint is stimulating, so it’s a great idea if you’re coming off coffee (great idea, btw: how did you decide to?)

  5. Awesome packed meals! I don’t have to pack many of my meals, mostly just snacks. I usually eat protein bars for on-the-go snacks. Fine by me! =P Since you are incorporating more weight training into your exercise regime and trying to build muscle and burn fat, are you changing your diet much? Decreasing/adding anything? I am trying to figure out how to eat to see the best results!

I eat a lot too…haha, I am in the kitchen all day, so hard not to eat, or not think about food πŸ™‚

  7. Suuuuper laughing at the trip inside your byo!!! I work from home, but I take my breakfast and lunch (and a snack!) to school on Saturdays so I feel ya on the big haul! πŸ™‚

  8. Cherry Velvet Protein Smoothie – that is one enticing recipe name! Add to that the fact that I like all the ingredients, and I’m wishing I had one of those in my hand right now.

  10. Oy. I have tried and tried to pretend that my body likes the thickeners…but I have recently given up the facade. After months of torturing myself, I threw them away. Wasteful, I know, but I would have continued to use them otherwise, and that would have been disastrous.

If I didn’t work from home, you know my lunch bag would be overflowing like that. I used to go to school and work in my office every day (until I got an office mate who NEVER shuts up), and I would get on my bike at 6 am for the gym, shower there, and then eat breakfast, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, all at school. It got to be heavy!

  11. What an awesome lunch! I used to bring these enormous salads to work – they filled the 8 cup tupperware rectangles. I could never find a lunch box to hold them, so I just carried them in a plastic bag, all ghetto style. πŸ™‚ I also liked bringing grain salads to work since they keep so well and I could make a big batch on Sunday nights and eat on them for a few days. Now that I’m home with the munchkins, I don’t have to pack a lunch anymore. πŸ™‚

  12. Love it! Was all the tupawares for one day? If so, that’s how my bag looks too!!

And mmm that shake sounds yummy!! Does yours stay cold when you pack it? (side note- my body can’t handle the thickeners either πŸ™ )
