I Got the Bugg

Posted byLori Posted onFebruary 8, 2011 Comments25

It’s true. My body caved.

I tried to fight it. I truly did.

But after a few exposures, I got it.

And Amazon provided it.

The BodyBugg, BodyMedia, BodyWhateverYouWannaCallIt.

I got it.

And I LOVE it.

This little device can be a powerful weight loss tool. But for Lori-purposes, I’m using it to gauge how much I’m burning versus how much I’m consuming to gain some much wanted muscle (but if anything, it’s just fun to have!).

Here are some screen shots of a weight lifting day, a “cardio” day, and Saturday when I hiked for 4 hours then sat the rest of the day. (click to enlarge graphs)

Weight Lifting Day: Lifting, 1 hour, went to work and sat pretty much the rest of the day. Notice how many calories were burned?! My metabolism was much higher this day, for the rest of the day, due to my morning weighted workout…

Here is the breakdown of calories (and METS) per minute. The morning lifting obviously spiked my metabolism… and more reason to cook your own dinner: around 6:00 pm I was cooking. Look at the calories burned then! (I get a little crazy in the kitchen sometimes…)

“Cardio” or Metabolic Circuit Day: Again, most of the day I sat around work on the computer. But for about 20 minutes before work I did a quick metabolic circuit, which I qualify as a “cardio” day. For 15-20 minutes I did little drills of body-weight squats, mountain climbers, jumping jacks, jump lunges, jump squats, etc. Nothing fancy. But it sure burned some calories… without hours on a stupid treadmill.

Hiking Day: Hiked (mostly flat surfaces) for around 4 hours. Sat around the rest of the day, pretty much not moving from the couch. I was exhausted afterward. This night I got in bed at 7:30 pm (I know!) and slept over 10.5 hours. That is NOT like me. But I burned some calories… more than I took in, sadly.

My sleep: I love this feature. Shows hours you’re lying down, sleeping, and the efficiency of your sleep. That night I was sleeping with 95% efficiency.

Don’t you want to catch the bugg too?!?!?! Pretty cool little toy, if you ask me.

Cool features:

You customize everything. After inputting your weight, age, blah, blah, all that good stuff, you decide if you want to lose weight, maintain weight, or increase weight. Based on this, you can either customize or have the BodyMedia information “write you up” a plan of action. Hence the “target” vs. “actual” at the top of each graph. The data, after synced, shows you hour-by-hour or minute-by-minute how many steps you took, when you slept (and woke up), calories burned, physical activity (the degree of intensity), and calories consumed. Again, I LOVE it.

Side note, sort of, is this guy my hero or should I be deeply disturbed? (Hugh Jackman’s diet for the new Wolverine movie consists of 6,000 – 8,000 calories a day) I guess that’s what it takes to gain muscle, right? Not sure anyone’s body can actually hold that much food. Geez.

*I have to mention, for all of you who commented yesterday, a huge thank you goes out! Wow. Not only did you like the pictures, but you think I have guns. I love each and every one of you that much more now. 🙂 You left me smiling and even more motivated to lift weights!*

Thought of the Day:

Man imposes his own limitations, don’t set any.

What limitations are you currently holding on to?

What limitations are you currently letting go of (as of today!)?

Any comments on the BodyMedia?

*More results with a non-workout day will be up soon.*

  1. What a neat gadget! I’d never heard of it! Looks like we are opposites. I’m probably eating more calories than I need, but walking more 🙂

  2. Never tried one, but I’m way curious 🙂 You look CRAZY BUFF in that picture 🙂 haha good work

  3. What a fun toy! Thanks for sharing the real-life use shots too. Sounds like it could be super-useful to you too.

I’m just home and multitasking too much (and need to go fix dinner) to think of a sensible response about letting go of limitations…
    love
    Ela

  4. i started seeing these a couple years ago and never realized how cool/useful they are!
i think i’d become a bit obsessed with tracking all that information! how fun to analyze and gauge everything, though!

  5. Oh my goshhh, I want this SOOOO bad! I’ve been so confused lately about how many calories I should be eating and I have NO IDEA how much I’m burning. Gosh, this would make everything SO EASY.

  6. I see ads for this all the time at the gym. I never realized how many features were on it! Pretty cool… I may look into getting one!

  7. Oh my gosh that is the coolest little device I have ever seen! Seriously, I want one now SO SO BAD! 🙂 I am truly amazed how you burn more calories lifting then you do on cardio days (or hiking days!) I’ve been reading more and more about this lately and I’m definitely inspired to lift weights some more…so healthy and metabolism boosting! Not that I really need that but still so so cool:)

  8. YOUR A ROBOT NOW! haha i love how high tech this little ‘bug’ gadget is!! <3 sometimes its beneficial to cave isnt it !! hehe

    xoxo

  9. That is amazing! I’d be worried that I’d become obsessed with the stats though…

  10. Kat-
I bought it through amazon, too. When you get your device you have to register it via bodymedia.com anyway- no matter where you buy it. That’s how you sync your info too. Simple. 🙂

  11. Wohhh that is insane. I want one! I think it would help me realize that I need a LOT of energy each day – I think I tend to underestimate my needs. Thats probably my main limitation that I am working on..
    Have a wonderful day gorgeous!

  12. That is so neat! I’ve never heard of that little device before, but now I definitely want one. 🙂

  13. Yo Yo Mama (aka mom)-
hahaha. That’s funny… and probably true. But that night I was running around making a very cool dish. I get SO excited when I make food. Seriously. Last night I was SO happy to make the food so I could take pictures of it. Posting about it tomorrow- I have to say, I’m actually really impressed with myself and my food-making/photo’ing skills lately. Sascha said last night’s meal was a 9.5 out of 10 (not a 10 b/c I don’t make things with a lot of fat). 🙂 It was GOOD.

So, about the calorie deficit- I would venture to guess that you are in deficit most days… seriously. When and if you upped your calories (but reduced certain parts- say like carbs or fat- not both) you’d probably drop weight fast.

  14. I REALLY need one of these!! My post later is all about how I KNOW I am not getting enough calories. Now that I am lifting, my tummy is constantly begging for food, but I still get around 1500 a day. I need some serious help in that department!

  15. HA! If my only worry was how I could fill a DEFICIT of calories. No, I don’t think that’s my problem. I think the reason you burned more calories while you were preparing dinner was because you were so excited to eat!! I’ve been around you when you were hungry…and nobody better get in your way until you’ve eaten!

  16. Oh my. I am buying one. I get a paycheck Friday. I am caving! Haha, it’s awesome! So awesome!!! What kind of package deal did you buy? The software? The screen? And, where is the best price for the best package deal? 🙂 I am stoked!

  17. April- I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Seriously. Love. lol

Yeah, it’s hard to eat that much! Especially since I’m not used to eating that much- mentally it’s difficult. Any tips? I’m still a little afraid I’ll gain (fat) weight. lol

  18. Yippe!!! Isn’t it such a useful tool? Are you going to try to eat according to it too? It’s crazy how we are in a deficit and don’t even realize it!!

And I’m so jealous of your sleep efficiency!! Mine is usually 60-80% because I wake up so much 🙁

    And AWESOME arms!!!
