In With The Good, Out With The Bad: Enjoying Life and Cleansing Days

Posted byLori Posted onAugust 25, 2011 Comments13

Day one of detoxing, or cleansing, or whatever you’d like to call it, can be difficult. I woke up with a headache. Now, I am not sure why I woke with a headache (before the actual detox!) but my body was probably already missing coffee. I don’t know.

Anyway, I started my day with two mugs of Candy Cane Lane peppermint tea. Yum. Celestial Seasonings teas are the best. The Candy Cane Lane one is my favorite. Sadly it’s only available during the holidays. Needing to mention, I do not get free products from this awesome tea company to review, but I would never turn down offers…

After a few hours of working on the computer, answering emails and such, I turned to my trusty Blendtec Blender to get my smoothie on.

Cleansing Smoothie Day 1

  • 1 small banana
  • 1 cup frozen berries
  • 1 cup fresh organic spinach
  • 1 cup filtered water
  • 1 tbsp maca powder (for adrenal support!)
  • 1 tbsp hemp seeds (for added love and protein)
  • 1 scoop sprouted brown rice protein powder
  • 1/2 dropper liquid Vanilla Stevia (use to your liking)
  • 1 1/2 cups ice, approximately

Blend it all together and pour into two glasses. And if you’re still craving more, drink both glasses.

See above for yummy granola.

And maybe I topped it with some Enjoy Life granola. Maybe.

Oh, come on! I’m detoxing, not dead!

The wonderful, wonderful people at Enjoy Life sent me some Double Chocolate Crunch Granola to try and you can definitely say that I was happily willing to be a well-fed guinea pig. They have great products, free of dairy, soy, gluten, and junk. This cereal was wonderful. Super crunchy with little bits of chocolaty goodness. Perfectly balanced with sweetness and salty. Just delicious. I’m truly a fan of this brand and am a happy, loyal buyer for life. Side note: You’ve gotta try this recipe from them.

And why the detox/cleanse? I’m in need of the vibrancy back in my life. I sense that my body wants nourishment of a different kind for a while, or just to be paid a bit more attention to. Time for some lovin’ of the soul kind with only good, clean foods and liquids.

No dairy, of any kind. That includes Greek yogurt. Dairy is extremely inflammatory and congesting. Oh and water. Lots and lots of water.

That brings me to lunch. After some snackage of fruit I made myself a large cleansing salad with steamed quinoa. No, it’s not Paleo, but I’m ok with adding a little quinoa love into my life once in a while.

Cleansing Salad Day 1

  • arugula
  • cilantro
  • green onions
  • white onions
  • homegrown tomatoes
  • lime juice
  • salt & pepper

The mass amounts of cilantro and lime create a powerhouse of cleansing properties. Both are known to help with the detoxing process and this salad is fresh, light, and leaves you feeling good.

Another snack was a second helping of the first green smoothie. Just too good to only have once a day. I do love my green smoothies. Feelin’ good is delicious, right?

Then, my favorite new food item!

Dum da daum! May I announce, the newest and most delicious fish added to my arsenal of foods: Ono Fish!

Ono fish, also known as Wahoo from Hawaii. Also known as the fish that the tasty restaurant Wahoo’s Fish Taco is named after. Pretty good restaurant. (wow, this post is full of branding links, isn’t it?)

At the local organic grocer there was a ton of new-to-me seafood items, including some frog legs. I browsed for a bit before deciding on a pound of Ono fish. It’s a white fish, similar to ahi tuna, but in my opinion, so much more tasty. It has a great flavor. I’m hooked after this one recipe.

Ono Fish Cilantro Grill

  • 1 lbs Ono Fish, sliced into 2 inch thick steaks
  • 1/4 cup cilantro, fresh and roughly chopped
  • 4 tbsp lime juice
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic, roughly chopped
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp each salt & pepper

In a medium side bowl, combine cilantro, lime juice, olive oil, garlic, paprika, and s&p. Spread half of mixture on top of one side of each piece of fish and set aside while you heat a saute pan.

Heat a saute pan on medium-high heat, adding in a splash of olive oil and 1/4 cup water (for steaming, non-stick properties, and using less fat, or just use more olive oil). Add the fish to the heated pan, cilantro-lime side down. Spoon the remaining mixture on top of fish.

Heat fish for 5 minutes on all sides, mine had 4 main sides since the steaks were pretty thick. Be sure to add more water, as needed for maintaining a stick-free pan.

Plate fish with a nice cleansing cilantro salad (like recipe above) and some sprouted tortilla heated on the same pan as the fish (so to soak up the cilantro mixture juices- YUM!).

Seriously, this fish is worth seeking out and tasting. So, so, so good.

So, that’s my cleansing day one. It’s not a full-on raw cleanse, which I’ve done in the past, but it’s what my body wants for the amount of exercise I give it and activity I do. Taking away the dairy and caffeine is fine and dandy for me for now.

Have you ever done a cleanse or detox before? What did you like about it? What did you gain from it (mentally, physically, intestinally)?

Would you like to know more about my cleanse?
