R.A.W. Series : Spring Juicing & Recipes

Welcome to Spring (and Friday)! Finally.

My favorite time of the year is Spring, as the flowers bloom, the trees turn pink and white with fresh buds and blooms, the Earth looks nourished and alive. Everything seems re-set, renewed, and replenished. For me, Spring is a time of awakening.

Warm weather and sunshine are the only two things in life I need. And food. And water. And people. And maybe my blender. And my favorite scarf.

Spring is sunny and happy and inspiring.

That is why there’s a new series on WRL, entitled, R.A.W.

Rock you Ass Well

I feel as though it is Spring’s duty, and mine, to pass on my enlightened Spring feelings. My knowledge and tips for wellness. My ideas on how to get everyone there. Please note: My ideas, knowledge, and tips all lead to eating well and thinking well.

For this post, we’re focusing on the eating part. Or rather, juicing.

I’ve had my spurts of time where I juice, juice, juice and then stop. I guess I’m like that with a lot of things, all gun-ho for a while, then some of the sparkle starts to fade. But I’m back on the juicing wagon and have never felt better!

After listening to the wonderful Juicing Goddess herself, Kris Carr, I decided to start putting more green juices back into my life. Verdict? MY BODY LOVES JUICING!

As you know, I have been eating mostly Paleo for some time now. Recently, I haven’t been feeling that great about my diet. I’ve felt low on energy, low on positive thoughts, and low on bowel movements (because I know you wanted to know…).

I had also been eating a ton of Greek yogurt (dairy isn’t always my friend), too much meat, and more processed foods then I have in a long time. My diet was screaming to be cleaned up.

So, back to juicing, more leafy greens, more veggies, and more lovin’ for thy self.

In just a few days of cutting dairy, reducing meat, greatly reducing coffee and caffeine and eliminating processed foods- while adding in a daily 16 oz green juice- I feel fantastic! I have tons of energy, my face has stopped breaking out, and things are running smoothly through me. :)

I love it!

So, in honor of juicing and Spring and smooth moves, here are my favorite juice combos (organic if possible, I do a blend of half organic, half not.. it’s expensive!)!

Sweet Fennel

  • 1/2 bulb fennel
  • 3 large celery stalks
  • 1 cucumber (if not organic, peel skin)
  • 1 green apple
  • piece of ginger
  • dash of cinnamon

Juice all ingredients, taste and adjust (more apple, more ginger, etc.). Sprinkle with cinnamon (like the picture below) and stir.

Enjoy and feel amazing!

————————————–

Red Pepper Pleasure

  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 1/2 bulb fennel
  • 1/2 large green apple
  • 1 cucumber
  • 3 celery stalks
  • 1/2 carrot, peeled

Juice all and enjoy!

————————————–

Pucker-up Green Lemon Juice

  • 2 large kale leaves
  • 1 cucumber
  • 3 celery stalks
  • 1/2 apple (green or other)
  • 1/2 lemon, peeled
  • 1-2 small tangerines

Juice all. :)

Simple.

————————————–

Mint Apple Pipe Cleaner
(recipe also found here)

  • 3 large sweet apples
  • 1 cucumber
  • 2 sprigs fresh mint leaves
  • 1/4 to 1/2 inch ginger root

Clean all ingredients, juice, sip with love.

What Green Juice combinations are your favorites?

Are you a juice fan? How did you get started juicing?

You ready to get R.A.W.???

Have an idea for the R.A.W. series? I’ve got a few ideas being typed out but the more ideas the better! (And you’ll get credit :) )

Pssst! Pass it on...

Great idea for a series! Love it. I go through phases with juicing, too; maybe I need to start it back up again soon and go juice-crazy with you :P

These sounds amazing, especially the red pepper one. I don’t have a juicer so I will just imagine it, lol.

I haven’t ever done any juicing but I do love a good green smoothie. Lately I’ve been on a banana avocado smoothie kick. I may try out some juicing this summer though.

Banana and avocado in a smoothie sounds so good- I never use avocados for blending purposes.

I never thought about it honestly until I was searching for a smoothie recipe online one day and stumbles upon it. It makes it really creamy. I tried one the other day with coconut milk (from a can) and it gave it that same creamy consistency too.

Love juicing! Hate the clean-up. Any suggestions on what to do with all the leftover pulp? I tried mixing it into a paleo bread recipe once and it was a disaster. Thoughts appreciated! And thanks for the recipes, they sound perfect for spring!

I don’t love the clean-up part either but I do two things (always!) when juicing:

1. run the pulp through the juicer again (2 times total) – you get a good amount of juice more the second time!

2. freeze or refrigerate the pulp for making soups, breads, rice, whatever. Adds nutrients to whatever you want to put it in. I haven’t made Paleo bread with the pulp yet but I have made some really good vegan bread. I should put the recipe up if anyone would be interested. :)

I’m on my second round of being wired shut for 6 weeks for jaw reconstruction surgery after a removal of an ameloblastoma (non cancerous jaw tumor). Needless to say, Juicing is a high priority for healing, and now that my throat is feeling better from the breathing tube, I can actually drink cold liquids! Yesterday I enjoyed: 2 gala apples, 1 bartlett pear, 2 stalks celery, 8 leaves swiss chard, few bunchfuls of baby collard greens, 5 carrots. It was a bit sweet, but I had to make it yummy! :) Also, mixing beets with oranges, helps take the earthy bite out of the beet.

Great idea for a series!

I don’t own a juicer (except for a little handcrank one) so I never go on juicing kicks, but I’m always bouncing from one “kick” to another.

So glad that you’re loving spring and that things are running more smoothly for you now. The fennel and mint juices both sound wonderful to me!

PS–did you get my email? And an idea for your “RAW” series: posts on your best picks for pre- and post- workout foods–you have lots of posts up already, but bringing them all together would be fun!

Hi Lori :) ) I have been eating Paleo for about 4 months now and want to start incorporating juicing into my diet. Can you recommend a juicer? There are so many to choose from. Which one do you use?

Thank you

Lori
